Esa \u00fanica pregunta detuvo a Coulter Somes en seco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somes creci\u00f3 en el Valle de Vail, pero en la universidad en la Universidad de Kansas, se sinti\u00f3 atra\u00eddo por el mundo de las fiestas y el consumo excesivo de alcohol. No pas\u00f3 mucho tiempo para notar que su consumo de alcohol era diferente: su tolerancia era mayor, su enfoque en el alcohol era m\u00e1s fuerte. Beber no era un pasatiempo; se estaba convirtiendo en parte de su identidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No ayud\u00f3 que el alcoholismo estuviera entretejido en la estructura de su familia. Y como muchos que heredan esta batalla, no vio la lucha hasta que ya estaba inmerso en ella. \u201cTengo una enfermedad\u201d, dice ahora. \u201cY realmente no tuve opci\u00f3n en eso\u201d.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin embargo, \u00e9l persisti\u00f3. Termin\u00f3 la escuela y obtuvo una maestr\u00eda en terapia familiar, la cual ejerce hoy en d\u00eda. A pesar de eso, \u00e9l todav\u00eda luchaba con su propia batalla interna mientras ayudaba a otros a conquistar las suyas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buscando la sobriedad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incluso despu\u00e9s de una decisi\u00f3n de cambio, la sobriedad no se enciende como un interruptor de luz. Somes se describi\u00f3 a s\u00ed mismo despu\u00e9s del incidente como \u201cseco borracho\u201d, donde no beb\u00eda, pero tampoco estaba comprometido con un estilo de vida sobrio. Sin intenci\u00f3n ni apoyo, todav\u00eda se sent\u00eda perdido.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Todo cambi\u00f3 cuando regres\u00f3 a Colorado y se conect\u00f3 con Joe Drew, un enfermero psiqui\u00e1trico de Vail Health Behavioral Health Services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSab\u00eda que Joe Drew ser\u00eda quien me ayudar\u00eda con esto cuando no me dio el juicio que viene con esta adicci\u00f3n; el alcoholismo tiene un estigma. Cuando todos intentan arreglar el problema y t\u00fa encuentras a alguien que te escucha, eso marca toda la diferencia\u201d, explica Somes. \u201cSab\u00eda que estar\u00eda de mi lado porque se centr\u00f3 en lo que yo ten\u00eda que decir y no en lo que todos los dem\u00e1s intentaban transmitir\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hab\u00eda mucha gente en la oficina de Drew para esa primera reuni\u00f3n. \u201cCuando Somes entr\u00f3, evalu\u00e9 lo que necesitaba. Pude verlo en sus ojos, especialmente porque su s\u00e9quito lo rodeaba. Este tipo necesita gracia porque es humano como el resto de nosotros\u201d, explica Drew. La compasi\u00f3n y el compromiso de Drew con Somes no solo han llevado a una relaci\u00f3n exitosa entre paciente y cliente, sino tambi\u00e9n a una amistad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Devolviendo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-27fff69e wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Con la ayuda de Drew, Somes se recuper\u00f3 de su adicci\u00f3n. Comenz\u00f3 a asistir a Alcoh\u00f3licos An\u00f3nimos y a trabajar en los 12 pasos, sabiendo que el \u00faltimo paso trata de retribuir. Aproximadamente un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s de su sobriedad, estaba acostado en la cama, leyendo \u201cUna vida con prop\u00f3sito\u2018, cuando se top\u00f3 con una frase que lo conmovi\u00f3: \u2019Un d\u00eda Dios te preguntar\u00e1: \u201d\u00bfQu\u00e9 hiciste con la vida que te di?'\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mir\u00f3 las palabras; no ten\u00eda una respuesta s\u00f3lida a esa pregunta. En ese momento, se propuso como prop\u00f3sito de vida devolver el favor. As\u00ed que, empez\u00f3 a buscar en Google, y esa madriguera lo llev\u00f3 a un lugar inesperado: la donaci\u00f3n de \u00f3rganos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Durante nueve meses, Somes viaj\u00f3 a Denver para realizarse ex\u00e1menes y an\u00e1lisis de sangre. Al principio, exploraron la donaci\u00f3n de ri\u00f1\u00f3n, pero luego el equipo le hizo una pregunta diferente: \u00bfEstar\u00eda dispuesto a donar su h\u00edgado?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPara m\u00ed, eso era impensable. Ni siquiera era una posibilidad. Sab\u00eda la magnitud del da\u00f1o que hab\u00eda causado anteriormente. Pero aprend\u00ed que solo se necesita una parte del h\u00edgado para que funcione y que esa peque\u00f1a parte funciona al 100%. As\u00ed que el \u00f3rgano que hab\u00eda maltratado con el alcohol durante tantos a\u00f1os era precisamente lo que salvar\u00eda la vida de alguien\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La llamada lleg\u00f3 de repente: hab\u00edan encontrado una candidata, una ni\u00f1a con una enfermedad que pon\u00eda en riesgo su vida. \u201cEso me afect\u00f3 bastante. No tienes mucho tiempo para pensarlo. Una vez que tienen una coincidencia, se mueven muy r\u00e1pido. Pero estaba extasiado, sab\u00eda que iba a salvar una vida\u201d, recuerda Somes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La cirug\u00eda dur\u00f3 ocho horas. La recuperaci\u00f3n tom\u00f3 seis meses. Dar un pedazo de s\u00ed mismo no solo salv\u00f3 la vida de otra persona, sino que tambi\u00e9n ayud\u00f3 a reconstruir la suya. No es perfecto, dice, pero est\u00e1 presente. Reconoce el milagro de estar aqu\u00ed, simplemente despertando sin el alcohol como su br\u00fajula. Y le da cr\u00e9dito al equipo que lo vio no como un problema a resolver, sino como una persona que val\u00eda la pena salvar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La gracia que Drew ofreci\u00f3 a Somes en sus primeros d\u00edas de recuperaci\u00f3n es la gracia que \u00e9l devuelve al mundo. Encontr\u00f3 su prop\u00f3sito, uno que surgi\u00f3 de uno de los cap\u00edtulos m\u00e1s dif\u00edciles de su vida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCada uno tiene un prop\u00f3sito en la vida; a m\u00ed me tom\u00f3 mucho tiempo encontrar el m\u00edo.
